Illustrative gig page. Every seller sets their own scope, delivery time, and price.
A virtual assistant business sells administrative, marketing, and executive support remotely, and the money is decided by two things: what you specialize in and where you sell it. Federal wage data puts the same job family between $19.88 an hour for data entry and $36.82 for executive administrative work, an 85% gap for people who all answer to the title virtual assistant. Selling packaged monthly tiers from your own gig page, instead of bidding hourly against a worldwide pool, is what lets you charge at the top of that range and keep 92% or more of it.

Benchmarks
What virtual assistant work actually pays in 2026
Every row names its source and its sample size. Federal figures are employed medians and behave like a floor; freelance figures are what sellers charge, not what any one gig will clear.

Why entry-level VA work is the one freelance job that pays less than the employed version
Across almost every skill we benchmark, freelance rates run about double the employed equivalent, because the freelancer absorbs unbillable hours, self-employment tax, health insurance, and unpaid time off. Virtual assistant work at the entry tier breaks that rule outright. Upwork publishes an admin and data entry band of $12 to $20 an hour for its own North American freelancers, against a federal employed data entry median of $19.88 and an employed VA average of $22.39. Run the arithmetic on the generous end of that band and it gets worse. Bill $18 an hour, work a 40-hour week at 60% utilization for 46 weeks, sell through a 20% marketplace, and carry $1,500 of software and overhead: you gross $19,872, keep $15,898 after commission, and after self-employment tax you net $12,363. Spread across the 1,840 hours you actually worked, that is $6.72 an hour, roughly a third of what the same work pays on payroll. To simply match the employed VA average of $22.39 per worked hour, you would have to bill $56.02 on that 20% marketplace, or $48.71 at our 8% starter rate. The take rate alone moves the number by $7.31 an hour. The reason is substitutability: generic admin work is the most globally interchangeable service in the freelance economy, so a US seller doing it hourly is priced against a worldwide pool. Executive support, bookkeeping ops, CRM administration, and project management are not, which is why the same federal dataset pays them $36.82. Specializing and packaging are not motivational advice here, they are the only versions of this business where the math works.
Questions sellers ask
Virtual Assistant gig work, answered
How much do freelance virtual assistants make?
It depends almost entirely on tier. Upwork's own North America table puts admin and data entry VAs at $12 to $20 an hour, marketing and customer service VAs at $20 to $35, and advanced VAs, consultants, and executive assistants at $38 to $50 and up. Employed VAs average $22.39 an hour across 462 Indeed salaries.
Is a virtual assistant business profitable?
It is profitable at the specialist end and frequently unprofitable at the entry end. A generic admin VA billing $18 an hour at 60% utilization on a 20% marketplace nets about $6.72 per hour actually worked after fees, overhead, and self-employment tax. The same person selling executive or bookkeeping support at $45 clears several times that.
How much does it cost to start a virtual assistant business?
Very little in cash and a lot in positioning. You need a computer, a business bank account, a scheduling and password tool, and a page clients can order from. The real startup cost is the weeks you spend at a low rate before you pick a specialty, which is why choosing one before you launch pays for itself.
What should I charge as a virtual assistant?
Work backwards from what you need to keep rather than copying a market average. Decide your take-home target, then add unbillable hours, self-employment tax at roughly 14.13% of profit, software, and platform fees. On our numbers, matching an employed VA salary requires billing near $56 an hour on a 20% marketplace.
How do I get virtual assistant clients?
The fastest route is a page a client can buy from without meeting you. Publish fixed monthly tiers with the hours, the tasks, and the response time written down, then share that one link in the places founders and operators already read. Referrals and agency overflow close faster than cold applications.
Do I need a website to sell virtual assistant services?
You need one indexable page that shows your packages, your hours, and your proof. A full site helps later, but buyers comparing VAs want scope and price on one screen. A gig page gives you that plus checkout, which is the part a portfolio site usually lacks.
How do I become a virtual assistant without experience?
Pick one narrow deliverable you can already do reliably, such as inbox triage or CRM cleanup, and sell that alone. Broad "any admin task" offers compete with the entire world on price. A named, bounded service is what lets someone with no client history charge above the entry band.
What services can I offer as a virtual assistant?
The profitable ones are the least substitutable: executive and calendar support, invoicing and bookkeeping operations, CRM administration and lead follow-up, customer support and order handling, travel and expense management, and project coordination. Pure data entry sits at the bottom of every wage table we could find, federal and freelance alike.
Is it better to join a virtual assistant agency or work independently?
Agencies find clients for you and set your pay, and the major ones do not publish what that pay is. BELAY, Time Etc, and Fancy Hands all list roles without a rate, and Time Etc asks for five to eight years of experience before you apply. Independent selling means you carry the marketing and keep the pricing decision.
How many hours a month do virtual assistant retainers usually cover?
Most VA retainers are sold in blocks: roughly 5 hours a month for light inbox and calendar cover, 20 hours for ongoing operational support, and 40 hours for near-full-time executive support. Selling the block rather than the hour is what stops clients from auditing your minutes and lets you get faster without earning less.
