Why the monthly plans only pay off once your queue is full
Every flat-fee plan in that table is a bet on volume. Ko-fi Gold costs $12 a month and removes a 5% fee, so it pays for itself once you sell $240 of commissions in a month. Payhip Plus beats Payhip Free above $966.67 a month, and Payhip Pro beats Plus above $3,500. Our own ladder works the same way: Pro beats Starter above $333.33 a month in sales, and Studio beats Pro above $1,500. Below those lines the percentage plan is cheaper, and plenty of artists pay for a subscription months before their queue justifies it. The bigger lever is price, and the wage data says most commission sheets are set too low. The federal median for fine artists and illustrators is $26.68 an hour, and that is an employed figure, with no self-employment tax, no unpaid sketch revisions and no evenings spent answering DMs. A $150 half-body piece that takes six hours of drawing plus an hour of messages pays $21.43 an hour before any platform touches it, which is below the employed median. Raising that same piece to $220 does more for your income than any fee switch in the table, because the entire spread from the worst platform to the best is $25.50 on $150.

Where is the best place to sell art commissions?
It depends on who your buyer is. Fan, OC and VTuber commissions sell best on VGen, Ko-fi and the social accounts where those fans already follow you. Commercial illustration, book covers and brand work sell to people searching Google, so a page that ranks for the service and takes the order is the better home for them.
Where to sell digital art commissions?

How much should I charge for art commissions?
Start from time, not from other artists' sheets. The US employed median for fine artists and illustrators is $26.68 an hour, and a freelancer needs more than that to cover self-employment tax and unpaid revisions. Estimate the hours a piece really takes, including messages, and price so the result clears that figure.
What are VGen's fees?
VGen charges artists a 5% service fee plus payment processing, with no upfront or monthly fee. With Stripe that is 2.9% plus $0.30, so a $150 commission leaves you $137.85. Withdrawals and refund processing are $0, and Stripe adds 1.5% to 2.5% on international payouts.
Does Ko-fi take a fee on commissions?
Yes, on the free plan. Ko-fi keeps one-time tips fee-free but charges 5% on commissions, shop sales and memberships, plus normal processor fees. Ko-fi Gold removes the service fee for $12 a month, which pays for itself once you sell more than $240 of commissions in a month.
Can you sell art commissions on Etsy?
Yes, as custom or made-to-order listings. Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total and, for US sellers, 3% plus $0.25 in payment processing. On a $150 commission that leaves $135.30. The trade-off is that Etsy buyers are shopping for products, so briefs arrive thinner.
Is Fiverr good for art commissions?
Fiverr brings buyers you would not reach alone, and it charges for that: 20% of every order, while the buyer pays a further 5.5% on top, plus $3.50 on orders under $200. A $150 commission leaves you $120.00 and costs the client $161.75. It suits artists who need a first client list more than artists who already have a waitlist.
Does DeviantArt still do commissions?
No. DeviantArt disabled new commission listings on May 1, 2026 and removed commissions on July 1, 2026, according to its help center. Custom work now sells as Originals, which take 20% without Core, 15%, 10% or 5% with it, plus $0.30 and 3.5% processing, and a seller without Core cannot list anything above $100.
Do I need a website to sell art commissions?
You need one page that shows your tiers, your examples, your terms and a way to order. A full portfolio site is optional. What most artists lack is a fixed price and an order form, which is why so many commissions stall in DMs between the quote and the order.
How do I get paid for art commissions safely?
Take payment before you start the final piece. A fixed tier paid up front, or a deposit of half up front with the balance before delivery, removes most non-payment risk. Keep the process inside a platform with a payment record rather than an informal transfer, so a dispute has a paper trail.
