Translator rates per word on Upwork run $0.08 to $0.15 for common languages, $0.15 to $0.25 for niche languages and $0.25 to $0.50 for legal and technical work. Employed US interpreters and translators earn a median of $60,170 a year, $28.93 an hour (BLS, May 2025). A US freelancer who wants to take that home, translating 2,500 words a day, has to charge about $0.26 a word or bill $82 an hour on an 8% platform, and $0.30 a word on Fiverr. BLS hourly figures are annual wages divided by 2,080 hours. The Bureau counts 73,900 interpreter and translator jobs, and 28% of them are self-employed, a larger freelance share than most occupations. Government pays employed translators best, a $74,320 median, against $60,850 in professional, scientific and technical services, where 30% of the jobs sit. Upwork's $15 to $25 median band is a worldwide figure and pulls the whole marketplace toward rates no US household can live on.

What you have to charge to earn a US translator's wage
The employed median is a salary. As a freelancer you pay both halves of payroll tax, your own health cover and your CAT tool license, and you only bill part of the hours you work. These are the rates that close that gap.

How those numbers are built
A 40-hour week with six weeks off is 1,840 working hours. At 60% billable, once you count prospecting, test translations, glossary building and invoicing, that is 1,104 hours you can charge for, or 138 eight-hour production days. Corinne McKay, a former president of the American Translators Association, puts agency pace at 2,000 to 3,000 words a day; at the 2,500 midpoint that is 345,000 billable words a year. Add $6,000 of expenses and $7,200 of health cover, then self-employment tax at 15.3% on 92.35% of profit, and gross up for the platform fee. Change any input on the freelance rate calculator.
Faster does not rescue a low rate
At 3,000 words a day instead of 2,500, the median break-even drops from $0.26 to about $0.22 a word. At 2,000 it rises to $0.33. Pace moves the answer by a few cents; the band you price in moves it by a factor of three. A translator quoting $0.10 would need to produce more than 6,500 finished words every billable day to reach the same income, which is not a workload, it is a quality problem waiting to happen.

The common-language trap
English and Spanish are the languages Upwork itself names as "common", the band it prices at $0.08 to $0.15, and they are the pair with the deepest supply. Every rate in that band keeps less than the $37,070 the lowest-paid tenth of employed translators earn. A US Spanish translator who prices to the band is not undercutting the market; they are funding the difference out of their own year.
The way out is not a rarer language. It is a specialty inside the common pair: medical records, immigration and court documents, contracts, patents, software strings. Upwork's own specialized band starts at $0.25, which is where the median break-even lives.
Per word, per hour, or both
Quote translation per source word so the client can verify the count before they agree, and so a fast translator is paid for skill rather than punished for speed. Add an hourly line at your floor for the work a word count cannot measure: fixing a formatted PDF, reviewing machine output, terminology research, or a revision round the scope did not include.
For certificates, IDs and other one-page documents, a per-word quote comes out tiny. That is what the minimum fee is for: one billable hour at your floor, about $80 at the median break-even, so a 60-word birth certificate is not billed at $15.60.

Work out the per-word rate that clears the take-home you need at your real daily pace. For the US median it is about $0.26 a word on an 8% platform. It is a floor, not a headline.
Time yourself
Track finished words per hour on your last few jobs, reviewed and delivered, not first-draft speed. Put that into the builder instead of the 312 default.
Set the guardrails
Write down a minimum fee, a rush definition and surcharge, an hourly rate for extras, and how you count words (source or target).
Publish as packages

The honest read: Contra charges the translator nothing and adds a flat $29 to the client's bill, so the translator keeps the most in dollars on this job, and above roughly $940 Contra's spread also drops below Studio's. Leaving an agency or in-house job
You earned near the $28.93 median on staff. Quoting that per hour, or the agency's $0.10 a word, as a freelancer is a pay cut of about two thirds once tax, health cover and unbilled hours are counted. Start at $0.26 and adjust from your timed pace.
Selling direct instead of through agencies
Agencies take a margin between the client's price and yours. Selling to law offices, clinics and exporters directly lets you charge the client rate. A published document package is what makes that work without a sales call for every certificate.
Adding a specialty

Should I charge extra for rush translation?
Yes, a rush job displaces other work or costs you evenings, so price it as a surcharge on the per-word rate, and define rush in the quote as anything above your normal daily output. Should I charge less for machine translation post-editing?
Charge for the hours it takes, not a fixed discount. Post-editing can be much faster than translating from scratch when the machine output is good and slower when it is poor, so time a sample of the client's actual output first. If you edit 700 words an hour and need $82 an hour, the post-editing rate is about $0.12 a word.
Do platform fees change what I should charge as a translator?
Yes. On a 3,000-word job at $0.26 a word ($780), Fiverr leaves the translator $624 while the client pays $822.90, Upwork leaves $702 with the client paying $819, and an 8% plan leaves $717.60 with the client paying $780. To clear the median wage you need about $0.26 a word on an 8% platform and $0.30 on a 20% one.
