How Much Does Patreon Take From Creators in Patreon Fees and Patreon Pricing
New pages pay a flat 10% plus processing, older pages keep 5%, 8% or 11%. Put in what you charge and how often you sell to see Patreon's cut on your plan, and what the same sales cost on a gig page you own.
For commissions and custom work, a gig page on the plan keeps you more a year than Patreon on the plan. Patreon on the plan costs less a year at this volume. Keep selling there.
The short answer
Patreon takes 10% of every payment from creators who published their page after August 4, 2025, plus 2.9% and $0.30 in processing for US cards and PayPal. Pages published earlier and never unpublished keep their legacy plan at 5%, 8% or 11%. Payout, currency conversion and Apple's iOS fee can come on top, and creating a page costs nothing.

Beyond the 10%
Five Patreon fees that are easy to miss
PayPal from outside the US
Fans paying by PayPal or Venmo from another country cost a full point more in processing than US fans on the standard plan.
Currency conversion
Charged on the whole payment, tax included, whenever a fan pays in a currency other than your payout currency.
Apple on iOS purchases
Eligible purchases inside the iPhone app carry Apple's App Store fee, and Patreon's platform fee still applies. US fans can pay on the mobile web instead.
Payouts
US direct deposit is $0.25 a payout. PayPal is 1% with a $0.25 minimum and a $20 cap. The payout fee does not appear in your earnings dashboard.
Tax on fees
Where the law requires it, Patreon adds VAT, GST or sales tax to its platform fee as a separate line, based on your business location.
How legacy creators lose their rate
Unpublishing a page, even briefly, or having Patreon unpublish it moves you to 10% on republish. Patreon's own advice is to use the pause tool instead.
Selling commissions
Four $150 commissions a month, Patreon against a gig page
Everything you pay per month on $600 of sales. Our rows include card processing at Stripe's US rate of 2.9% and $0.30, because our marketplace fee is billed separately from the payment.
| Where you sell | Monthly cost | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Patreon Standard (10%) | $78.85 | New creators. Platform fee $60, processing $18.60, one payout $0.25 |
| Patreon legacy Pro (8%) | $66.85 | Only if your page has stayed published since Aug 4, 2025 |
| Patreon legacy Founders (5%) | $41.05 | Cheapest row on the table. Do not give it up |
| FreelanceNation Starter + Stripe | $75.60 | $9 a month, 8% marketplace fee |
| FreelanceNation Pro + Stripe | $67.60 | $19 a month, 5% marketplace fee |
| FreelanceNation Studio + Stripe | $85.60 | $49 a month, 3%, pays off above about $1,500 a month |
The honest read
If you are on Founders or legacy Pro, stay. Founders at 5% is the cheapest way to sell on this table by a wide margin, and legacy Pro is within a dollar of our Pro plan.
New creators are in a different spot. At 10%, Patreon costs less than our plans below roughly $375 a month in sales, because there is no monthly charge. Above that, the 5% fee on our Pro plan wins, and the gap grows with every sale: at eight $150 commissions a month Patreon costs $157.45 and our Pro plan $116.20.
One more thing the numbers do not show. Patreon is built for memberships, fans paying every month for posts. We do not run memberships. The comparison holds for commissions, custom pieces and services sold per order, which is what a gig page is for.
Who this page is for
Artists who sell commissions through Patreon tiers
Plenty of illustrators run commissions as a Patreon tier: a fan joins the $25 or $150 tier, sends a reference in chat and gets a piece that month. It works, but every commission pays the full platform fee, the brief lives in a chat thread, and a client who only wants one piece has to remember to cancel a membership.
- One-off clients They order once and pay once, with no membership to cancel.
- Scope in writing Each tier lists what is included, revisions and turnaround before anyone pays.
- Found on Google A gig page can rank for searches like "hire an illustrator", which a Patreon tier cannot.
- Lower fee at volume 5% on our Pro plan against 10% on Patreon standard, above about $375 a month.
How creators structure commission tiers, and where they break down, is covered in Patreon commissions for artists. To set the prices themselves, start with art commission prices, and compare Patreon with the other places artists sell in art commission sites compared by fee.
Questions creators ask
Patreon fees questions, answered
Each answer leads with the direct reply, from Patreon's own help center wherever it says something.
How much does Patreon take?
Patreon takes a 10% platform fee from creators who published their page after August 4, 2025, plus payment processing of 2.9% and $0.30 per payment in USD. On a $10 membership that is $1.59, so you keep $8.41. Older pages may still be on the 5%, 8% or 11% legacy plans.
How much does Patreon take from creators?
On the standard plan, about 13% to 19% of each payment once processing is added: 18.9% of a $5 pledge, 15.9% of a $10 pledge and 13.1% of a $150 commission, because the $0.30 weighs more on small payments. Legacy plans take less. Payout, currency conversion and Apple fees can come on top.
How much does Patreon take from memberships?
The same as from anything else you sell there. Patreon applies one platform fee to memberships and one-time purchases alike, 10% on the standard plan, and the processing fee is charged on every successful payment. A $5 tier pays you $4.05 on the standard plan, before the payout fee.
Does Patreon take a cut of commissions?
Yes. A commission sold as a paid tier or as a one-time purchase is a processed payment, so Patreon takes its platform fee and processing on it like any pledge. On a $150 commission the standard plan takes $19.65. Patreon does not run a commissions feature with its own fee schedule.
Is Patreon free to use?
It is free to create a page and list work, and there is no monthly subscription for creators. Patreon earns only from the platform fee on payments you receive, so you pay nothing until a fan pays you. Processing and payout fees are deducted from the same payments.
Why are Patreon fees so high for new creators?
Because Patreon replaced its tiered plans with a single 10% plan for pages published after August 4, 2025. A new creator pays 25% more in platform fees than a legacy Pro creator at 8%, and twice what a Founders creator pays at 5%. The standard plan also includes features that used to sit on higher tiers.
Will I lose my legacy Patreon plan if I unpublish my page?
Yes. Patreon says that if you unpublish your page, even briefly, or if Patreon unpublishes it for any reason, you move to the standard 10% plan when you republish. To stop billing without losing a legacy plan, Patreon recommends the pause tool instead of unpublishing.
How much does Patreon take on iPhone purchases?
Apple charges its 30% App Store fee on eligible purchases made in the Patreon iOS app, and Patreon still charges its platform fee on top, although it waives its own processing fee there. Fans in the US can pay through Patreon on the mobile web instead, which avoids the Apple fee.
What are Patreon payout fees?
For US creators, direct deposit costs $0.25 per payout. PayPal payouts cost 1%, with a $0.25 minimum and a $20 cap, and require at least $10. Creators outside the US pay $0.50 or more through Payoneer, and Patreon notes the payout fee is not shown in the earnings dashboard.
