Freelancer checking a client payment on her phone next to an open invoice

Upwork Freelancer Plus costs $19.99 a month on the web and includes 100 Connects. Those 100 Connects cost $15 if you simply buy them, so the subscription charges you $4.99 a month for everything else in the plan. Whether that is worth it comes down to two numbers you can check in your own account: how many Connects you burn, and how much you bill clients you brought to Upwork yourself.

Short answer. Upwork Plus is worth it if you bill more than about $100 a month through Direct Contracts, because Plus drops that fee from 5% to 0%, or if you use the bid insights to win jobs you would otherwise lose. On Connects alone it never pays: buying the same 100 Connects is $4.99 cheaper every month, and $12 cheaper than the $27 App Store price.

Plan details read on Upwork's help center on 9 October 2026.

How much is Upwork Freelancer Plus?

Freelancer Plus is $19.99 a month when you subscribe through Upwork, the figure Upwork gives on its own resources page. Subscribe from the iPhone app and the Apple App Store charges $27. Upwork's help center does not print the price at all; it tells you to open Membership plan and choose Change Plan to see what your account will pay, so check there before you upgrade.

The plan renews monthly. The 100 Connects land at each renewal, sometimes up to 12 hours later, and your first month carries 90 to 100 depending on what you already received on the Basic plan. To cancel without paying for another month you have to downgrade before the renewal date starts at midnight UTC, which for a US freelancer usually means the afternoon or evening of the day before.

Is Freelancer Plus cheaper than buying Connects?

No, and the gap does not close at any volume. Upwork sells Connects at a flat $0.15 with no bulk discount, so 100 of them cost $15 whether they come in a bundle or inside the plan. Above 100 a month you buy the extras at the same price on either plan, which means the difference stays at exactly $4.99 however much you bid.

Your monthConnects usedBasic, buying ConnectsPlus at $19.99
10 proposals at 880$12.00$19.99
20 proposals at 8160$24.00$28.99
30 proposals at 12360$54.00$58.99
50 proposals at 16800$120.00$124.99

Light bidders lose the most. At 80 Connects a month you pay $19.99 for $12 of Connects and leave 20 unused. If your account is one of those that receives 10 free Connects a month on Basic, the plan costs $6.49 more than buying, not $4.99. To run your own numbers, including how much each hire costs you in Connects, use the Upwork Connects cost calculator.

When is Upwork Plus worth it?

The one benefit with a hard dollar value is the Direct Contracts fee. When you bring a new client onto Upwork through a Direct Contract, Basic charges you 5% and Plus charges 0%. Five percent of $100 is $5, so once you bill roughly $100 a month that way the saved fee covers the $4.99, and everything above that is profit.

Take a designer who brings one returning client onto Upwork for the escrow and bills them $1,500 a month, and also sends 20 proposals at 8 Connects. On Basic that month costs $24 in Connects plus $75 in Direct Contracts fees, $99 in total. On Plus it costs $28.99. The plan saves $70.01 a month, and it would still save money if the proposals stopped completely.

The other benefits are worth paying for only if you would act on them. Bid insights show where proposals on a job are priced, which helps when you keep losing on price you could have matched. Instant alerts help in categories where good jobs fill within hours. If neither describes your week, they are not worth $4.99.

When is Upwork Plus not worth it?

Skip it if you use fewer than 100 Connects a month (about eight proposals at 12 Connects each), because you are paying for tokens you will not spend. Skip it if you have no clients of your own to move onto Direct Contracts. And skip the App Store route entirely: at $27 the plan costs $12 more than its Connects, which is more than double the web premium for the same account.

The bigger reason it is not worth it is upstream of the subscription. If you win one job in thirty proposals, the whole Connects bill lands on that one contract, and Plus does nothing to change your hire rate on its own. Freelancers in that position usually get more from fewer, better-targeted proposals than from more Connects.

What does Upwork cost in total with Plus?

The subscription is the small line. Upwork's service fee runs from 0% to 15% per contract, and Upwork's own worked example uses 10%. A freelancer billing $2,000 a month from two jobs, with 30 proposals at 12 Connects, pays $200 in service fees plus $54 in Connects on Basic, $254 in total, or $258.99 on Plus. Our Upwork fees breakdown covers the client-side fees that sit on top of that.

Billed a monthUpwork Basic, 10% + $54Upwork Plus, 10% + $58.99Gig page plan + Stripe
$1,000$154.00$158.99$98.60 (Pro)
$2,000$254.00$258.99$167.60 (Studio)
$5,000$554.00$558.99$343.60 (Enterprise)

The gig page column adds Stripe's 2.9% plus $0.30 on two orders because a gig page does not process the payment: the client picks a fixed tier, sends the brief, and you invoice them. Upwork holds the money in escrow and brings a much larger flow of posted jobs, which is a real advantage when you have no clients yet. The trade is that you pay Upwork to apply and again when you are paid, while a gig page plan charges a monthly fee and a percentage of completed orders only.

Is Upwork Plus worth it for beginners?

Usually not in the first month. New accounts can earn Connects by finishing profile setup and identity verification, and some receive a one-time bonus of 50 after their first Connects purchase or Plus subscription. A beginner sending a handful of careful proposals a week will rarely use 100 Connects, so buying a small bundle and tracking which proposals get replies is the cheaper way to learn the market.

Are there ways to get clients without paying for Connects?

Yes. Direct invitations on Upwork cost no Connects, so a strong profile in a narrow niche pays off twice. Outside Upwork, freelancers who already know their buyer often get further pitching them directly with personalized cold email sequences than by bidding against fifty other proposals on the same post. And a web design gig page or any other fixed-tier listing turns the search around, because the client comes to you with a tier already chosen.

If you sell on Fiverr as well, the same subscription question comes up there: the Fiverr Seller Plus price breakdown shows that none of its tiers lowers the 20% commission, and the freelance fee calculator puts both marketplaces side by side on what you keep from a single job.

How do I decide in five minutes?

Open your Connects history and note how many Connects you used over the last 30 days. If it is under 100 and you have no Direct Contracts, stay on Basic and buy Connects as you need them. If you bill a client of your own through Upwork, multiply that monthly amount by 5%; if the result is above $4.99, upgrade on the web, not in the app. Then set a reminder to review it a day before the renewal date, because a late cancellation buys you another month.
